Where to Get Your First Horse in Breath of the Wild?
Horses can be found in many places across the world in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but the most obvious place to get your first is at Duelling Peaks Stable, found on the safest path to Kakariko Village. While crouched to avoid making too much noise, approach a horse from behind and then press the A button when close enough to mount. The horse will try to bolt, so pull back on the left stick to take control.
If you find horses that are being ridden by enemies, one hit with an arrow will send the rider falling to the ground and to their doom. Now the horse is free from its rider but it will likely be spooked when approached and run away. Sneak up to it and hit the A button as soon as prompted to mount the horse. Pull back on the left stick to calm the horse and now you're in control.
Depending on where you find a horse you may have to face numerous other enemies. While Link is riding you can take down enemies on horseback by simply hitting them with a single arrow.
How to Name Horses in Breath of the Wild
Horse stables can be found throughout the game world. The first is the Duelling Peaks Stable that you're likely to come across if you take the simple path to Kakariko Village during the Seek Out Impa Quest.
At a stable you can register a horse so it becomes your companion. You can board up to five horses at a time. Registering a horse costs 20 rupees, but also comes with a saddle and bridle. Once registered you can name your horse.
- Horses with spots on them are even-tempered and easy to train. These horses are good for beginners.
- Horses of one single color (such as straight black or white) are more wild and harder to train. The upside is that these horses have more stamina and run faster.
- To train a horse you have to sooth them when they do what you want them to do.
- Board your horses at stables and summon them from any other stable in the game.
- If you become separated from your horse, press the Down Arrow button and Link will whistle. As long as you're not too far from your horse it will come running.
So that's how to find, tame, and name horses. You're bound to have favourites along the way, probably determined by which you happen to give the best name. If you'd rather develop no personal bond, by all means name them Horse 1, Horse 2, Horse 3... but where's the fun in that? By all means name yours after the USGamer staff if you want. Kat and Mike aren't normal names for horses, but whatever makes you happy.
It's not just horses you can ride in Breath of the Wild. It's possible to ride a deer, a bear, and a lynel. You can also find numerous special horses, including Lord of the Mountain.
We have a lot more on Breath of the Wild for you to take a look at. There's Mat's writeup on how you can use whistling to fish. Next up is Hirun's piece on how to launch Guardians into the area using the Cryonis Rune.
